How do journalists find their news?

According to a report from Arketi Group, they turn equally to industry sources and news releases (90%). They also get in touch with their public relations friends (89%).

More than half of the journalists report using blogs and RSS feeds when looking for story ideas (54% and 51%, respectively).

The newswires are also a frequently relied upon ally (70%), with Web sites and other media outlets securing about three-fourths of the vote (74% and 72%, respectively).

For years I have counseled clients to make sure they’re telling their story online. Almost every one of these top ways journalists find stories includes the Internet.

Journalists are using the Internet more than 20 hours a week, according to the 2007 Arketi Web Watch study. They use it to read news, email, find news sources and story ideas a majority of the time.

Blogs are increasing in popularity with many journalists reading them (72%) and quoting from them (20%).

Again, I repeat that failure to maximize exposure online means you’re missing out on one of the most effective ways of telling your story — most effective, in my opinion, next to personal relationships.
