46 social media monitoring and measurement tools

media monitoringThis list of 46 media monitoring and measurement tools was prepared doing research for my March 20, 2013 presentation, Today’s Best PR Measurement Tools, for Ragan’s 2013 PR Measurement Summit in Washington, D.C.

It encompasses both social media and website measurement and analytics tools. However, it doesn’t take into consideration the many publishing platforms and software-as-a-service offerings that are available, which may also offer some analytics tools.

Many of the tools are free, some aren’t and some are quite expensive – geared toward large multi-location organizations.

There’s something for everyone in this list of social media monitoring tools. And if you’ve got a favorite platform you’d like to add, or some clarification on the information presented, please do post a comment.

Note: I’m curating content from the conference and adding to this list, so although 46 tools were included initially, there are more now. Also, given the nature of these tools, some may be offline or may have merged with other services. If that’s the case, please let me know and I’ll update the list.

  2. Pete,

Thanks for the great list. Did you already had a look at our tool Replise (www.replise.com). Comprehensive monitoring with own crawler and historical data. We also have a team of international analysts that is happy to help with the intelligence part. If you have questions please let me know.

  3. Hello Pete, how are you?
I would also recommend Talkwalker – it might really interest you. It monitors content in 187 languages, from 247 countries, especially in online news, blogs, forums, and Facebook/Twitter/YouTube.
The recent release of its alerting system has also been well received.
For an international monitoring and analysis, this is absolutely great. And it lets you engage on Facebook and Twitter from directly from the platform.

  4. Thanks for the callout, Pete

A complete and comprehensive list – however, for larger brands who have a need for international listening, Buzz Equity is a cost effect option, pulling in data in multiple languages. Many options from the free social search to the Pro and Enterprise editions starting at $19.95/month

  6. Wow…cool post, Pete! I think the information in this list is really useful for researching and choosing the RIGHT social media monitoring tool.

Even though the information you gave explains the essentials of each tool, it’s frustrating for me that the free-trials on many of these tools have a lot of strings attached. I like to be able to play around quite a bit with a tool before committing to paying for it, you know? I just tried out another free tool that I think is worth including called “Buzz Equity.” It’s a real-time social media search platform where you can search for mentions of a brand on an extensive list of frequented social media websites (including Asian platforms). The coolest part is that you can search as many times as you want for free! Anyway, the URL is: http://www.buzzequity.com

  7. This is a very comprehensive list, thanks for sharing Pete (and thanks for including Brandwatch!)

A few more you may want to consider adding also: Synthesio, UberVU, Meltwater Buzz and Netbase.

Also, NM Incite is shutting down some of its analytics products: http://techcrunch.com/2013/02/06/layoffs-for-nm-incite-the-nielsen-mckinsey-jv-that-does-twitters-tv-ratings/

    Thanks 🙂

    • Thanks for mentioning Synthesio, Jasmine 🙂

Agreed, a very comprehensive list – however, for larger brands who have a need for international listening, Synthesio is a strong option, pulling in data from 200+ countries & 50+ languages. Also, ranked #1 for data quality in the WebLiquid Buyer’s Guide: http://synthes.io/VOZLap.

  8. Thanks Pete! Is there a reason you didn’t recommend Crimson Hexagon?
